An ODS code is the join, not the trust name
NHS bodies change names, merge, and share similar titles. Institrace joins directory rows, invoices, accounts and papers on the Organisation Data Service code. A supplier name is not a company number.
NHS bodies change names. They merge. They share words such as community, foundation and partnership. A search for a display name will hit the wrong row, or miss the right one. The stable identifier in the England pack is the Organisation Data Service code.
Institrace treats that code as the join. The invented example on these plates is RXX1 for Northvale Health. The name is a label. The code is the key. We do not turn a similar supplier name into a Companies House number.
What the code unlocks
One ODS code can sit on a directory row, a spend file, a TAC year, a contract snapshot, and a tracked source that holds board papers. That is how a researcher puts an NHS body next to a council, a supplier and an officer without building the join by hand. Official portals will not do that. The Open Data Portal will not do it against committee minutes. Companies House will not do it against TAC.
The join is only as good as the identifier in the file. NHSBSA monthly invoice CSVs loaded here have no company-number column. Those payments stay as published supplier names. They are not counted as company joins. TAC years in this index do carry an ODS code. That is a different grain, and it is labelled as such.
Why most ODS rows are not sources
The directory is large. A row can be a site, a closed body, or an organisation with no public board page we have confirmed. Institrace does not list those rows as sources. They stay off Sources. The public catalogue is the list of bodies we intend to index as papers, not a dump of every health code in England.
If you need the directory itself, that is a register, not a papers list. Counts for organisations, active trusts, ICBs and joined sources are on NHS datasets.
How a person enters the picture
A board member joins through an officer filing on a tracked body, or through another published identifier we already hold. We do not match a surname on a minute to a supplier line and call that a company join. The FAQ states the rule. About states the limit: we surface what is there. We do not interpret it.
