An investigation is the file you keep
Pin the records you are reading, write your own notes, and download one zip when you want a copy. A key can add a pin to the same file. Clearing pins is not the same as clearing the file.
One subject. The papers you pinned. Not the whole body.An investigation is a file on your seat for one subject. You pin the records you are actually reading, you write notes in your own words, and when you want a copy you download one zip. It is your reading list. It is not a finding, and it does not attach two records.
Open one from the dashboard, or from All investigations. Name it after the subject, not after a conclusion. Then go to a person, a company, a body, or a paper and press Pin.
What to pin
Pin the papers you care about, and the person, company, or body they belong with. A pin is a pointer back to a record that is already on the index. A pin is not a join. Pinning a council does not pull in every paper that council has ever published. If you want a paper in the file, pin that paper.
A note is yours. It can sit on a pin or on the investigation. The index never reads it, and it never appears on a public page.
Clearing up
Two buttons, and they do different jobs.
- Clear pins is on one investigation. It takes the pins off, and the notes that were written on those pins. The investigation itself stays, including its own note and the dated trail of what you did.
- Clear investigations is on the dashboard and on All investigations. It deletes every investigation on your seat. The confirm lists the titles first, so a real file is not removed by accident. A file someone else has shared with you stays.
The download
Export, on the investigation, spends one export and gives you a zip. Inside it is a contents list: the pins, your notes, and the trail. Then one text file for each paper you pinned, up to 200. Each file is the text we hold, plus the address of the original on the publisher's site.
A trial includes 2 of these downloads for the whole 14 days. A paid Researcher seat includes 8 a month, Practice 30, Newsroom 80. The count is on the investigation and on your account. A search download, a person page, and a Pack do not use this number.

The key uses the same file
If you create a key, it can search, open a paper, and pin the result onto this investigation. You will see that pin on the site. The key cannot download the zip. You do that yourself, so you know what you are taking. A key asks the same questions you do is how that side works.
