A pin is not a join

A pin keeps a record on your investigation. It does not attach two records. That is the same grain as a name in a paper is not a join, applied to the signed-in home. If you treat a pin as evidence, you will over-read your own file.

Take the invented council again. Vale Civic. You open the officer Hale, a lease paper, and the council body. You pin each one to an investigation called the harbour lease. You write a note on the paper. Those acts organise your reading. They do not create a person, a company, or a connection on the index.

What a pin is

A pointer from your investigation to something already on the index: a person, a company, a body, a paper, a register row, a search you want to keep, a pack, or a date you typed. The title and the link come from the record. A paper pin stores the file hash at that moment, so you can see if the publisher replaced the file later.

Practice seats see the word Matter. It is the same container. Sharing, where the plan allows it, lets another seat at the same organisation pin and note. It does not let them rename or close the file. How records attach is still the rule for the index itself.

What a note is

Your words, on a pin or on the investigation. When the pin is a paper, the note cites that paper and the hash at the time of writing. If the file changes, the page says so. The matcher never reads a note. A note never appears on a public page. Nothing you type can mint a person or a company.

That limit is the point. Journalists and solicitors already keep working files. The product has to say that those files are yours, because a search box makes it easy to forget which words came from the publisher.

The signed-in home shows what attached on your watches since the last visit, what is coming up, the investigations you have open, recent searches, and recent notes. It is not the holdings page. Totals stay on the public home.
